*I can compare features of pictographs, dot plots, and bar graphs.
We began exploring data this week. How can data inform representation? This week students explored the problem below. Students were excited to create their own graphs based on the question. Students were assessed on sorting, developing a survey question, conducting a survey, and their survey reflections.

Some sorting plan ideas included:
  • Color
  • Brand
  • Size
  • Type of shoe (runner, boot, etc)
Some survey question ideas included:
  • What is your favourite brand of shoes?
  • What are the hardest shoes to put on?
  • What size are your shoes?
  • What are your favourite color of shoes?

*I can pass and catch a ball with a partner.

Literacy (Writing)
*I can look at different purposes for messages to be shared.
This week students grew their writing. Students worked on formulating paragraphs (hamburger writing) and writing author prefaces for their math stories. See some of their work below:

Students were eager to engage in feedback loops when sharing their math stories. They worked on active listening, completing their author checklists, and giving/receiving feedback. We are excited to share these math stories at conferences next week.

Science
*I can compare the properties of materials to determine what material is best for a specific purpose.
Wild things are happening in Grade 2! We arrived at our classrooms on Friday morning and leprechauns had made a mess! We worked together to clean the rooms up and design leprechaun traps using STEM bins.

Student Voice
"This week at school we discovered a secret message in math by doing addition and subtraction facts." -Addison

"This week at school we wrote about how to trap a leprechaun as well as made a wanted poster about our Leprechauns because on Sunday it is St. Patty's Day." -Archer

"This week during writing, we learned how to write using a hamburger picture. It means the bun is the beginning of your story, the patty, lettuce, cheese, and tomato is all the detail, and then the bottom is the ending." -Edie

"This week we worked on our writing. I liked writing about St. Patrick's Day!" -Sully

"I solved a math logic puzzle." -Everly

"I learned how to catch a leprechaun and we built traps!"-Jacob

Have a wonderful weekend!

Thank You
As our February month of kindness drew to an end, students reflected on how fortunate they were to have so many wonderful opportunities and experiences at Andrew Sibbald School.

School Support: It takes many wonderful support staff to keep Andrew Sibbald School and our Grade 2 friends living their best lives! We are so lucky to have Mrs. O, Mrs. Shannon, Mrs. David, Mrs. Norman, Mrs. M, Mrs. Dupuis, and Mrs. Machnee support our students in a variety of areas.

Parent Support: Grade 2 students are also very fortunate to have an active volunteer pool. Thank you! We see and appreciate all you do for us. Thank you also to the parents who aren't directly in our classroom and support fun lunch and snack initiatives. We are always happy to enjoy a tasty treat!

Grade 5 Buddies: Grade 2 students look up to their Grade 5 buddies. Grade 5 students are a wealth of information and leadership! Thank you for all of your great efforts.

Student Voice: Grade 5 & 6 students you do a wonderful job of coming up with great initiatives at our school. We are so proud of the bake sale you organized and the funds you raised for mental health. Together we are better.

Literacy
*I can look at alliteration, onomatopoeia, and repetition in spoken language.
*I can listen and respond to a fictional text.
*I can look at and use words and phrases from texts that have been read aloud.

This week we began reading the book, "We're Going on a Lion Hunt" by David Axtell.
Students were slowly shown the book cover. revealing section by section. They were asked the following questions:
  • What do you notice?
  • What do you see?
  • What are the characters doing?
  • How are the characters feeling?
Students saw a variety of animal pictures and were asked what they would feel if they were that close to an elephant, giraffe, or lion. Students listened to the story with their eyes closed and reflected on the descriptive words they heard. They were also eager to act out the story and used "freeze frame" movement to demonstrate the actions (e.g., splishy splashy lake). We also learned what the word "onomatopoeia" means. Have your child share an example.

Gym (Ringette & Hockey)
We continue to work on hockey and ringette in Phys ed.
*I can control the puck/ring with increased confidence.
*I can pass/shoot with increased accuracy.
*I can follow rules and safety guidelines.
*I can collaborate effectively with peers.
*I can actively engage and demonstrate enthusiasm.

Buddies
*I can participate in a variety of roles in learning contexts.
*I can practice sharing and listening to the ideas of others.

Wow! Our incredible buddies had a fun art task for us to engage in! The fabulous Claire and Syndey (representing Student Voice) organized slides to explain why we were creating felting squares symbolizing kindness. Claire and Sydney presented to both Grade 5 and Grade 2 classrooms at the same time. Way to go leaders! Grade 2 students drew and coloured hearts and Grade 5 students supported their younger buddies in using felting techniques safely to create a kindness quilt square. We are very excited to see the completed quilt!
