Math
*I can compare different unit fractions of the same whole, limited to denominators of 10 or less
*I can compare the same unit fractions of different wholes.
A fraction review sheet was sent home with your child on Friday. Please practice these questions and discuss where your child might find fractions in their environment.

Literacy & Science
Wow! This week, students began their animal research projects. They worked in small groups to read facts to each other and record notes. Then, they used these notes to write paragraphs about their animals. Have your child share their animal work and group work experience with you. This inquiry will continue for the next few weeks. Check out some work examples below.

Robotics
*I can apply creativity when designing instructions to achieve a desired outcome.
Mr. Newman taught students about a "programming sequence" to follow. Ask your child to share their sequence (e.g., direction, sound).
Literacy
*I can examine and apply a variety of processes to comprehend texts.
*I can make predictions before and while reading, viewing, or listening to a text.
This week, students focused on prediction skills by reading "Monster & Mouse Go Camping" and rubbed a "crystal ball" to create examples of what might happen in the story. Students also drafted non-examples. Have your child share their predictions.

Student Voice, students
"This week at school we went on computers to type our stories." -Thavi
"I wrote my animal research on the computer." -Breton
"We painted butterflies in art." -Everly
"In math, we played addition and subtraction snakes and ladders." -Weston
"I learned that you can change the direction of the robots when we programmed them." -Gabby
"This week, we learned about fractions, and we can practice them this weekend."-Sully

 Hello Families,

We had a great week in Grade 2!

Calgary Zoo Field Trip
*I can discuss and compare the life cycles of various plants and animals.
*I can Identify similarities between offspring and their parents.

Thank you so much to our volunteers who joined us on this field trip. We had a blast! Students were excited to explore dinosaur centers and learn about the prehistoric park. Check out some of our zoo adventures below.

Science (Matter)
*I can compare the properties of materials to determine what material is best for a specific purpose.
Thank you to our parent engineers Graham and Adrienne for teaching students about structural design concepts. Students used spaghetti noodles, pood noodles, tape, and dental floss to create their designs/drafts of towers. Students will continue to design and build in the following weeks.

Math (Number)
We continue to explore number sense.
At home, students could practice:
-2-digit addition and subtraction under 100
-skip counting by 2s, 5s, 10s, and 50s
-estimating quantities
-comparing and ordering numbers
-identifying where numbers are placed on a number line
-identify numbers as even or odd

Literacy (Journals)
*I can collect ideas that are inspired by a variety of experiences.
*I can ask questions to focus on research topics.
*I can gather factual information on topics from various sources.
This week students wrote about their zoo adventures. Have your child share what they wrote about. Check out some entries below.

Student Voice
"In building, I learned about tension and comprehension."-Adam
"At the zoo, I learned about three types of fossils." -Jacob
"This week at school I learned about building a tower so that it can stay up." -Winnie
"I learned about different animals at the zoo." -Oliver

 Hello Families,

We have had another exciting week in Grade 2! Happy Mother's Day to all of our fabulous Grade Two moms!

Robotics
*I can work individually or in groups to create instructions using precise words, pictures, or diagrams.
*I can test instructions with three to four steps to verify that a desired outcome is achieved.
*I can identify ways creativity is used to design instructions.

Financial Literacy
This week students continue to explore financial literacy. Students were given $100 to spend on camping and needed to decide how much they would spend on needs versus wants. Ask your child how they allotted their money. Was more spent on needs or wants?

Art (Teacher's Pet)
*I can engage in reflection, composition, and expression when completing a painting.
Students participated in an art program that supported the grade two curriculum connected to our Social Studies "A Community in the Past" unit. This rich learning opportunity, had students look deeply at art while focusing on the prairie region. They create a painted canvas using various techniques and colors from an interpretation of Ted Harrison's original work. Check out their paintings below.

Zoo Field Trip
On Tuesday, May 14th, 2024, students will be departing promptly from the school at 8:30 a.m. and returning at 2:15 p.m. We will be traveling by school bus provided by Southland Transportation Ltd. Students will participate in the “Dino Styles" learning program. Students will explore dinosaur adaptations, fossil creation, dinosaur diversity, parental care, and the food chain. They will apply mathematical knowledge to measure length using units. Students will also explore the zoo exhibits in small groups.
Students are required to bring a lunch, a water bottle, and a snack for the day. Students will not have the opportunity to purchase food, so it is important for students to come prepared. Students are expected to dress appropriately for the weather. Students are asked to leave all electronic devices at home.

Students have been busy exploring their "Junior Paleontologist" journals. Ask your child what the difference is between a herbivore and a carnivore. Check out some of their dinosaur loose part exhibits below.

Have a wonderful weekend!
