Valentine's Day Cards
This year, students can give out Valentine’s cards to their friends on February 14th, 2024. Please note that this is optional, but we do ask that if your child brings Valentine's cards, they bring 22 cards to give to all students in the classroom. We will not be sending home a name list. We ask that your child address their cards to "Friend" and write their own name, indicating who the card is from. This will ensure they are easier to distribute in a timely manner.
Telus Spark
Thank you to all of the volunteers who joined us on the trip. Your time is truly appreciated. Check out some of our pictures below.
Math (1 is a Snail, 10 is a Crab)
*I can investigate strategies for addition and subtraction of two-digit numbers.
This book uses the number of feet on various animals to be the units by which numbers can be expressed. So for example: “40” can be 10 dogs (10 x 4) 20 people (20 x 2) or 6 insects and a dog (6 x 6 + 4). The book is a humorous and colorful illustration of part-whole thinking.
Learning Target:
Represent a number using tens and ones.
Intentions:
Count to 100, starting at any number less than 100. In this range, read and write numerals and represent several objects with a written numeral.
Understand that a two-digit number's two digits represent tens and ones. Understand the following as special cases:
a. 10 can be considered a bundle of ten ones, called a "ten."
b. The numbers from 11 to 19 are composed of a ten and one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, or nine ones.
c. The numbers 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, and 90 refer to one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, or nine tens (and 0 ones).
Exploration
Students were given time to illustrate their number picture using snails, dogs, insects, humans and crabs. They were given manipulatives such as unifix cubes in sticks of ten or counters to support their understanding.
Summarization
As students shared their number pictures, they were asked how many tens and ones there were in their number.
Literacy (Podcasts)
*I can contribute to a variety of listening activities to build confidence in oral language skills.
This week we explored podcasts. Students listened to while writing "jot notes" to share their understandings. Podcasts are a great learning tool to support working memory, visualization, and text/information summary. Ask your child to share their favorite podcast they listened to.
Have a wonderful weekend!
