 Hello Families,

Bake Sale
Wow! Thank you to our incredible Grade 5 and 6 students who organized treats for the bake sale to raise money for mental health. Your treats were delicious and a great addition to Pink Shirt Day!

Pink Shirt Day
Students were excited to share their understanding of Pink Shirt Day and friendship. They created torn paper pink shirts and wrote about it in their TWAS journals. Check out their bulletin board art below.

Puppet Residency
Thank you so much for joining us at our Grade Two puppet show. Students were so excited to share their learning. If you were not able to attend please see some of our puppet show curricular slides below.
*I can listen to, discuss, and express views about a wide range of story connections.
*I can discuss the sequence of events in books and how items of information are related.
*I can recognize recurring literary language in stories and poetry.
*I can discuss and clarify the meanings of words, linking new meanings to known vocabulary.
In our final lesson, students looked at how each emotion is described in the book, and together used this structure to create a similar section for the feeling of love.

"It makes you feel good and wonderful."
"It makes you want to make friends and play with them."
"It makes you feel safe from fear."
"It makes you want to spread it with everyone."
"It makes you want to play and dance."
"It makes you feel very proud of yourself."
"It makes you feel you are better."
"it makes you want to dance and be creative."

Math
We engaged in a variety of Leap Year math centers this week! Students worked together to bring movement into math tasks. We continued to work on reviewing together and practicing kindness.
Our centers included:
1. Lily pad leaps (Can you throw a beanbag at a lily pad number target and add the numbers together?)
2. Longest leaps (How far can you jump? What was your shortest distance? What was your longest distance?
3. Leap to 29 (Create 10 different ways to make the number 29, tallies, pictures, number sentences etc).
4. Flycatcher (Can you create a bar graph to measure how many times your leapfrog jumped into a fly cup?)
*I can compose a sum in multiple ways.
*I can compare and order measurements of different lengths measured with the same non-standard units, and explain the choice of unit.
*I can record data in a graph.

Gym (Ringette)
*I can develop physical literacy through movement and active living that supports well-being.
*I can maintain enough pressure on my stick to keep the ring with me while moving in my area.
*I can move the ring side to side while traveling across the gym.
*I can pass the ring SAFELY to a partner.
Students were excited to start ringette this week and look forward to playing again next week.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Puppets
* I can contribute to discussions as a listener and speaker.
* I can examine messages that combine both verbal and non-verbal communication.
* I can change verbal or non-verbal language according to purpose and audience.
Our puppet show creativity is blossoming! Without sharing too many details ask your child to share the puppet feeling and who they are partnering with. We can't wait for you to join us next week to celebrate their learning.

This week students acted as "Emotion Explorers" in groups to give advice to the Colour Monster facing different scenarios. Some of their answers are included below.

Scenario 1: My little brother has just broken my favorite toy.
"Go talk to your brother and tell him how you feel."
"Tell your parents and they will help you deal with it."
"Calm down and talk to your brother. Talk to your parent. Walk away."

Scenario 2: I am going to the dentist. I have never been before, and I am scared that it will hurt.
"Try to think of something else and be brave."
"Think of the good things that can happen, healthy teeth!"
"You can ask the dentist what she/he will do and say it's your first time and say you are scared."

Scenario 3: I find it really hard to go to sleep at bedtime. I often think that there is something under my bed...
"Ask a parent to tell you a looooooong story so you forget and fall asleep."
"Take three deep breaths and think of a giant candy land!"

Scenario 4: I am at a friend's house. Mom says it is time to go, but I don't want to! We've just started playing a new game.
"Pause the game and do it next time."
"Take the game with you."
"Ask nicely to finish."

Math
We continue to explore 2-digit numbers and recognize place value. For additional practice at home have your child write numbers in a variety of ways (expanded form, pictures, tallies, words, etc).

Have a wonderful weekend.

Loose Parts
*I can grow my well-being through positive relationships built on communication, collaboration, empathy, and respect.
What is love? What are the things that you love the most? If we could see inside your heart, what would we find there? We examined these questions in our class through the Map of My Heart loose-parts designs. In "My Map Book," Finelli inspires us to think about maps in a whole new way with wonderful images of maps, including “A Map of My Dog,” “A Map of My Day,” “A Map of My Stomach,” and yes, “A Map of My Heart.” Check out our loose-parts heart maps below.

Social Studies
*I can identify the cultural characteristics of groups and communities.
This week we learned about the Lunar New Year. Have your child share 3 facts they learned.

Puppetry Residency
*I can create imaginative dramatizations and representations.

Grade 2 students and teachers were excited to begin their work with WP Puppet Theatre this week. Students began creating puppets using various materials based on anchor texts selected by classroom teachers around well-being outcomes from the Curriculum.  Thank you to our amazing Andrew Sibbald Parent Association for covering the cost of this learning experience.  We look forward to exploring this text in greater depth in the coming weeks.

Math
*I can grow my well-being through positive relationships built on communication, collaboration, empathy, and respect.
This week we explored group work math tasks.  All groups were given bags of Valentine's candies. Groups worked together to estimate, count, represent numbers, identify even/odd numbers, identify more/less than a given number, create a bar graph, and a line plot, and then use this information to analyze their data. Students assessed themselves as partners using the rubric below. Ask your child to share what they enjoyed and any challenges they experienced working as a group.

*I can select a variety of strategies to show addition with multiple addends,
Mrs. Gordon our Math Learning Leader has come up with some fun, engaging, math tasks for us. Check out our tasks below. Ask your child which path they took and how close they got to 20 of 100. What animals did they see?

Have a wonderful weekend.
